Border conditions are hot in India and we all know the reason behind the same. Every single Indian sleep in peace with the thought that army personnel is awaked on the border for them and countrymen’s perception is not wrong as Indian army is well known for fulfilling its duty in any condition.
We all know about their bravery on borders and often see one side of their personality which is glamorous. But have you ever thought about the workout behind the same? We as a common man have all tools and gadgets easily available with us which sometimes bounds us to take these things for granted.
Imagine yourself living up on “Himalayas”, far from compartments of plain in a bunker with no gym equipment to work out. Keeping oneself mentally and physically fit in these circumstances are next to impossible.
Seeing their immense contribution to the country, we have decided to dedicate an article to them. In this post, we are going to reveal some of their secret exercising tools and workouts that they use at the time of emergency. So let’s jump right into it:
Environment available to Army
Land and Air Force:
Though land army gets ample amount of space to work out and can do their pushups anywhere on the face of the earth. They are open to beautiful sceneries of their surrounding that adds some kind of zeal and sense of assurance to pull up things.
As far as air force is concerned, they too land upon the planet and their duration up in the sky is not that long. Once they are back in their airbase, they live up a normal life similar to civilians and workout in their gymnasium equipped with the latest machinery.
The difficult part is with naval ones; they are left up on gigantic structures in the middle of oceans where you can’t see any sign of vegetation or building tower for months. The environment there is really depressing as there is no sense of assurance like landscape or even a bird.
Allow me to draw a picture as how it looks on naval deck and what limited resources are there for army men to prepare themselves for emergency situations. First and obvious base or asset for them is ship itself; this construction acts like their jogging park where they can dig up but with space constraint.
Second and a bit formal chamber is gym constructed on their gigantic yacht. On an average, there are 4 workout areas. Now, you must be thinking that oh, this is a pretty good number of squares for them. But let me interrupt your imagination; these four pits are shared by over 2000 crew members. Isn’t it too much? Yes, it is.
In reality, it appears no less than your college campus at 5 pm on Monday with less fancy equipment. Now, you can imagine how difficult will it be for our personals to get in the shape (which is the eternal part of their job) with limited accessory and ground.
Tools available to them
After seeing these conditions, an inevitable question arise that how these gentlemen workout and what is their secret of unmatched fitness?
In order to consistently train and keep themselves motivated, troops are trained to adapt to the isolated condition like spending life on army ship for months. Fortunately, this kind of training is engraved in their routine from day one. They are adapted to work on unique tools which are as follows:
These impeccable instruments are found in commercial gyms but they are more seen in military squares. Want to know why? One they are less space taking and two they are versatile enough for various moves; with one arm or two, you can perform presses, squats, rows, push-ups or carries.
Want to know the best part?
Kettlebell has a unique ability to make almost any movement into a core testing or lung-busting adventure and that too without any hurt or pain. Isn’t it cool?
Yes, Sandbags serves as an excellent form of resistance that is plentiful and portable at the same time. It is literally impossible to not find them in soldiers’ vicinity. Many times it happens that personals run out of time to move the squat track from one side to the other side of the ship before next meeting.
…These Sandbags suffice as a stellar workout tool. Like the Kettlebell, these bags have an amazing ability to make light weight feel heavy and awkward. Not only this, they are great for grip strength as well. (Wow!)
#3. Ammo Cans
I am sure; you have worked so much with the dumbbell at the regular gym. But it’s a bit plentiful while at sea and therefore, their shapes are bit different too. You will be surprised to know that these are more plentiful than dumbbells aboard any vessel or in any camp.
Here’s the kicker:
From rows to curls, presses to swings, there’s as such no exercise that a dumbbell can do and ammo can’t. It’s availability in different shapes and sizes, and little space coverage makes it the- more versatile tool available.
#4. Body Weight Moves
Body weight calisthenics has been a staple in the military just like the cardio in the gymnasium. Do you want to know the reason behind the same? They are simply effective, no matter how much of experience do you have in strength or exercise.
Jumps, bounds, pull-ups, push-ups, inverted rows, handstand push-ups, lunges, mountain climbers, jumping jacks, planks, and dips are few among the classic exercises that we often indulge in. At the limited time and space contingency, troops engage themselves in body workout.
#5. Other Tools
Going through above account, please don’t come up to the conclusion that military has entirely different equipment than regular ones.
They do have tools like barbells and dumbbells, but mainly because of space constraint, you will find more of versatile, small-footprint tools like suspension systems and jump ropes. Each of them is effective in its own way while training a variety of energy systems and body parts, and can be stashed easily when not being used.
